Chandrasekhar (Mohanlal) is an IPS officer who lives some kind of a lonely life after being divorced from his wife, Deepthi (Priyamani), a leading criminal lawyer. He lost his sparkle as a police officer after his family breakdown. He lives in a dark and violent city but even when unlawful incidents take place around him, he withdraws himself from all responsibilities and is happy to live quietly. But, things change when he is made the head of the Metro Crime Stopper Cell in Kochi. In the initial days Chandrasekhar is his cool self, focusing more on household chores and the chessboard on his table. Things seem to change when he single-handedly saves three college girls abducted by a psychologically deviant guy.
Chandrasekhar gets a congratulatory note from an anonymous man calling himself “Z” who challenges Chandrasekhar to figure out how he is going to bump off one target after the other. Chandrasekhar is forced to take up the investigation of the murders, which follows a mysterious alphabetical pattern. Chandrasekhar and everyone had believed that Victor Rosetti(Babu Anthony) was behind all these but there was someone who made him believe that he was the murderer ,after he killed the three females in three places of Ernakulam in alphabetical order. The killer failed to murder the fourth female.

After the film Madampi, Mohanlal and director B. Unnikrishnan joined hands again in this film. It was reported by the producer that its theme is very fresh and racy with lots of variety situations. Grandmaster is the first production venture of Bollywood production company UTV Motion Pictures in Malayalam. Priyamani essays the female lead character. Priyamani, who has some acclaimed Malayalam films under her belt, was chosen after she expressed her desire to feature in a film alongside Mohanlal. “This is an important role, but, from the looks of it, will not pair her romantically opposite him. Yet, she will be seen in many scenes opposite Mohanlal. This is going to be a role that requires someone who can set the screen on fire. So, the makers felt that she would be a good bet, considering her previous releases in Mollywood,” says a source.
Shooting of the film started from December 2011 and was carried out primarily at two locations: Kochi and Ottapalam.
The story of the film draws inspirations from Agatha Christie’s detective novel The A.B.C. Murders. The characterisation of Chandrasekhar, the film’s lead character, is also inspired from Hercule Poirot, the protagonist of the novel.
